Because people don't like what they can't understand, and most people don't understand that film is actually the purest and best medium for art. It involves all aspects of other art and melds them into a something more beautiful than other art form can hope to accomplish. When you think about it movies are aural with music and sound, visual (especially with a good cinematographer), and literal because good writing is very important. It takes all of these together creating an ultimate uber art.

I've never heard anybody say that, and if they have, they're watching the wrong films. I can't picture anybody watching 2001: A Space Odyssey, Vertigo, Un Chien Andalou or The Passion of Joan of Arc without accepting cinema as a genuine (and probably the most versatile) artform.

They probably think you have to read a good book to be well rounded, and to talk to people face to face. The art of communication and entertainment are two very different things. These people are phony snobs that don't know anything.
