There are alot of idiots in England, who assume (mking an *** out of themselves) that all Americans are fat and stupid.
I have met alot of Americans, and the only thing i have found is they tip way to much for England, £1 or 2 is good, not £10 or £20 though!!!
Most English will make their impression of you in the first 30 seconds, as with any person of any nationality would.
Don't not come to England for the idiot minority that stereotype all the don't know or understand. England is a lovely country, especially the South West, where you will find the people extremely friendly, not to say the rest of the country isn't but i found in Oxfordshire the people can be a little up their own backsides (though not all).
Hope this is helpful, if you need to ask more feel free to email me. x x

Why shouldn't you get a decent reception in the UK,i personally like the american people,i briefly worked with an american girl for about a month nice lady she was to very polite. After all the UK is fast becoming the 53rd state lol,we have tons of Starbucks,Subways etc etc.... all over the place, you'll feel right at home.
Don't be put off by stories of blithering idiots who don't know a damn thing of what they are talking about, most of us are generally good deecent people who get on with everybody. If you haven't noticed the UK has become a very multicultural, multiracial society so don't feel as though you will be perceived as stupid because you are american.

This answer is very deep and philosophical. Some of a lesser mind will feel offended. If you are easily offended, dont read this.
Admittently you may be hated depending on how you behave, and heres why.
I was reading a newspaper article couple of months back that, the reasons that Americans are hated by the british and other countries is because they can condescend and think America is the greatest in the world. They make guesses on answers about things, but if they are wrong, they don't like being corrected.
From personal experience, I have seen Americans who do that, who act all "Oh, ours is much bigger/ better" etc. They get looks of indignation.
I have also seen Americans who respect the sights of the country they are visiting, and behave mellow and mature. They ask sensible questions about things they see, they are interested to learn new info and have inaccurate information corrected. These are a joy to welcome to our country.
In conclusion, you want to be in camp 2. Behave, don't act smug and superior and enjoy it as a holiday, not a competition.

No, even if an Englishman hates America, and believes perceived stereotypes, they'd usually be tactful enough to not mention anything about that to you, and if they were half decent they give you a chance to prove you're not a stereotypical yank.
Even if you are a stereotypical yank, even the most anti-American probably wouldn't hate you immediately, at least not until you annoyed them. It's different on the net, but in person most people would be tolerant enough to give you a chance.
Same can't be said for the thugs we have in this ole country.

Well, apart from the public whippings and burning all our visiting tourist with hot oil (not to mention the tar and feathering) I think everyone gets a pretty decent welcoming.
England is a brilliant place to visit, and we're not all tea drinking, fish and chip eating, beer swilling barbarians either.
Shopping is great, food is brilliant, and the weather so far has been 2nd to non. So come on over, bring some friends and enjoy the hospitality. You'll love it.
As long as you remember the Scot's, Welsh and Irish are not English (and vice versa) you'll be fine

My local pub is 1000 years old....as long as you accept that when it comes to culture, your country is well down the list, you will be fine! Most americans are very polite, friendly people and the british like them alot.....its just the occasional bore who thinks that USA is the centre of the universe that bugs us. Come on over!
PS-The pub is called the Fleur De Lys and its in Pilley in the New Forest (in Hampshire) if you fancy visiting it, just up the road from The National Motor Museum at Beaulieu!

I don't think the British hate American's and I'm sure we would not be rude or other wise to most of them. I say 'most' because I think if it were to be that numb scull President you have then things may be different. But then I guess half of Ammerica may feel that way to the same way as some people feel about Blair in the U.K (poor man what a job to 'choose' to do!?)

I live in England and I am English. I have never heard of a poor treatment from my friends who are American who have been to England.
All English hating Americans is just another stereotype. Just as all English are posh, drink tea and live in London is a stereotype.
I personally LOVE the American accent. =)

Nooo...not at all, we are naturally this surly and grumpy with everyone - it's the weather that does it! (see you're not the only people who are stereotyped, you know!)
Just too be on the safe side though, every one that I've ever met with an American accent has insisted they were Canadian! (Do they warn you to lie about this in the aeroplane as you fly over, or were all the Americans I've met actually Canadian!!!)
Anyhow you could try that If you were really that scared - I'm sure that most people will be friendly whether your 'Canadian' or not.
