I'm starting to believe that there is no real reason for it unless you're having children. This is in part due to society today losing respect for it .

I don't think "outdated" is the right word.
More like "marginalized" and "unneccessary".
Today's society has moved away from marriage being the key to success.
Lenders will more freely lend to 2 individuals than before. So mortgages are easier to get that way.
Marriage is actually punished by the government in the case of family support. In many cases, to get any subsidies, you cannot be married, or have a man in the house.
Being a "single mom" used to get a certain looks from people. Now it's a badge of honor.
It's not so much that marriage is outdated as that men are being made irrelevant. Get a sperm sample and his social security number, and your set for the next 25 years.

Marriage isn't outdated. There is still something to be said with a committment. Yeah the divorce rate is 50% or so, but even breakups of parents is just as high if not higher if they were never married. There probably aren't any stats on that. I think culture shows us in movies like, My Best Friends Wedding, Father of hte Bride, Runaway Bride, etc. that many of us still want that forever committment. Perhaps, we wait until later in life to do it, but if you think about it, we also live longer too. I can't wait to find MR. right and spend the rest of my life with him and take his name as my own.

Well, people are marrying later but I think that's more due to women wanting careers and not being so dependent on men.
I think people are just catching on that marriage really hasn't been very successful... with a 50/50 rate of success/failure, those aren't odds people would happily take in almost any other bet or endeavor.

In today's world it is not a necessity to get married. One can live with someone and still have all the benefits of a marriage. Some people think marriage is just a for the moment thing, and others take it seriously. I myself feel that marriage is not for me.

Apparently...70% of marriages are unsuccessful, in some demographics that number is higher, J. Lo. has had more husbands than Joan Rivers has had facelifts, and two people of the same sex who truly love eachother can't get married. Hmmm...sounds like one big clusterfuckin' society to me ;-P

Definitely not. But getting married for the wrong reasons is. You marrry because you're in love and not because all your friends are getting married. Most importantly, it has to be for the long haul.

I think so, yes. I also think that's part of what's so great about it. It's an assertion that no matter how much the world may change, certain values and institutions can still survive if we want them to.
