If you have the factory disks that came with the computer just insert the first disk of the recovery set and let it restore the OS and allow for you to install the programs that came with the computer. It should format the drive in the process. When it's all done it will be just like new.

First off try fiddling with the Add/Remove programs in Windows...... then use "Zonealarm Internet Security Suite" to scan for Viruses + Spyware + empty the caches.
http://www.zonelabs.com + also SPYBOT: Search & Destroy from http://www.safer-networking.org/

Also this piece of software helps put the Windows Registry straight: http://www.tune-up.com/

If that fails, then back up all essential images / e-mails / documents..... this is where either a FLASH drive or an external hard drive comes in handy........ or perhaps a CD/DVD writer + some blank disks.

Then stick in the first of the rescue disks & restart the computer.... follow the onscreen instructions.

First, uninstall any programs you don't want. Delete old files that you don't need. Then go to start menu/accessories/system tools. Do the disk cleaner, which will remove unneeded programs. Then select the disk defragmenter, which will clean out the files, and basically organize them, so that the computer can run faster and more efficiently. The defragmenter may take a day or two to completely clean out the files, but it is worth it, it will probably help a bunch. Don't reinstall windows unless you have to, reinstalling windows is a big hassle.

Use system recovery, if you have the original Dell discs just put them in and follow instructions. On some computer try pressing F10 when you first turn it on.

If you have Windows discs google how to format.

If you have the XP disk and don't really care about saving anything, install a fresh copy. You'll want to delete that particular partition. Follow all the prompts, and when you reformat, use the normal NTFS format, don't do the "Quick format"

If you have a bunch of "crap" on the computer, it is easier just to reformat, than to do all the stuff people are trying to tell you to do. Reinsatlling Windows isn't anymore of a hassle if you just follow the directions!!!!!!!!!

you really dont have to use the Operating System discs along with your computer unless you hadnt set a restore point. you dont need all the discs just one and that one disc is your OS disc stick it in the drive. or if your computer has a Recovery Partition drive it should already do everything for you including restoring everything including software and programs and restores your computer back to factory Specifications.

I wouldn't format, you have an OEM verison of Windows. Better go to Control Panels and Add/Remove Software.

Read the owners manual. It will explain exactly how to do it. Other wise do a google on reformatting computer. It is way too much to explain here on questions and answers.
