It's mostly an evolution thing, I don't think anyone really knows for sure. Snakes can be either oviparous-egglaying, ovoviviparous-young born alive but nourished with a yoke, or viviparous-born alive with a placental-like connection, much like mammals. Apparently the last 2 are more common in snakes from colder climates, where the female can control the incubation of the eggs via body temperature, rather than leaving them exposed to the elements.

more of a evolution issue, some snakes may have evolved that way to increase their offspring's survivability. ( live birth over eggs). More live to slither off, as opposed to incubating in an egg, with a greater change of getting eaten. or not, who knows for sure

evolution my friend, evolution.
most snakes lay eggs, only a small number of snakes give birth to live young.the species that give birth to live young also protect thier young for a while, sometimes actually carrying them in thier mouths.the species the lay eggs just lay thier eggs and move on.they offer no protection whatsoever to thier offspring and the babies must fend for themselves after hatching.
