hmmmm.... you could perform a specific gravity test on it or if you have access to nitric acid you can put a drop of it on it and see if it reacts or not. Simplest thing to do is take it to a local jeweler and have him or her check it out for you. They usually don't charge for the test.

Treat it with acid (almost any acid will do) and see if there is a chemical reaction. If it's gold, there won't be. If you need a non-destructive means, use x-rays: different elements absorb x-rays of varying lengths differently.
