well, id probally be able to give you better ideas if i knew if it was a girl or boy.
boy........take them to a place where they can eat pizza, and play vidoe games.
girls, let them get their nails done, or pedicures. this always excites that age group.

A treasure hunt - if you think you would enjoy doing some clues then make some up and let the children work them out - just make sure you have prizes for everyone unless you want it to be really competitive!
My family used to do another sort of treasure hunt where a list of items was provided and everyone had to find as many things on the list as possible. We used to have three hours or so and were allowed to drive around the area - difficult for 12 year old's I know, but in a park or somewhere it wouldn't be impossible. The hardest item was always a 'green flower' but there was all sorts of other things, a feather, a beer mat, easy things like that, though when asked to produce a pair of stockings one uncle picked up the nearest female and, with her legs over his arm, said 'ta-da'!
Anyway, anything that requires thinking (i.e. not too embarrassingly childish), which uses up excess energy and is a bit different should go down well with 12 year olds. The main thing is that you enjoy organising it too!

In light of the new movie, why not a pirate party. That would be so much fun. The kids could each design their own eye patch, walk the plank game, and there is sure to be lots of fun stuff for loot bags. Your cake can be a BIG ship. Have fun and be creative.

I had a Fear Factor party for my daughter and everyone loved it. I had a bunch of gross foods that they had to eat. Bobbing for spiders (fake ones, of course) and took gummie worms and put them in pie tins with green tinted coolwhip and they had to get the worms out with only there mouths. you could do so many cool things with this theme... Hope this helps.
