I am pregnant with my second child, my 1st pregnancy was smooth sailing, but I have this concern I might have a tubal pregnancy. Does anyone know about how long it takes to find out if it's an ectopic (week wise)? Has anyone ever had one and when did you find out, and what happened?

Ugh, I hate when people say things when they don't know what they're talking about. My first pregnancy was an ectopic. I was only 5 weeks along when it was caught because it ruptured. I didn't even know I was pregnant. I started out having major pain on the left side of my abdomen and then shortly after, I passed out. I came to, went into the hospital and started having pain in my shoulder. The tube had to be removed because of the damage done when it ruptured, but in a lot of cases, if it is caught early enough the tube can be saved. I am pregnant again and I went to the doctor as soon as soon as I found out to rule out another ectopic. He did a blood test to find out what the level of HCG was in my system. They also did a pelvic ultrasound. I had to come back 2 days later for a repeat HCG test. A pretty good site to check out would be the one listed below.

If you have symptoms, HCG levels will be far lower than normal with an ectopic pregnancy. This can be tested for in the first 10 weeks. Pelvic exam (probably with an ultrasound) and possibly a culdocentesis test (looks for internal bleeds) can be performed. Don't expect anything definitive if you are less than 6 weeks.

Symptoms usually start around 6-7 weeks with pain, bleeding, tender belly, and shoulder pain. An ultrasound can quickly rule ectopic out.

I dont know week wise, but definitely within the first trimester you would know. If you are concerned, call your doctor and he can schedule an ultrasound to check. If it does come up that the pregnancy is eptopic, then a surgery will be preformed to remove the tube that the embryo was growing in.

Tell your doctor immediately if you suspect this is the case. These pregnancies are usually not viable.

Go see your doctor right away. That's the only way you'll know for sure.
