The sphere in the center is the crew compartment. The "disk" section contain a series of coiled tubes arranged to form a complex Hallbach array. High energy plasma is circulated though the tubes, and in doing so generates a magnetic field OUTSIDE the crew compartment that is so powerful, it can cut off the ship from the rest of spacetime, so it has an effective mass of zero. At lower power levels, it allows the ships to ride the magnetic field of the planet. I'm sure you've noticed how reports of close encounters almost always include descriptions of electromagnetic disruptions such as cars stalling out and radios being unable to receive signals.

well look how short it took for us to go from the write brothers flyer to a man on the moon, super sonic flight (was though imposable once too, just like faster then light is though to be now) if a civilization had even just 100 more years then us on this stuff then us who knows what they may be like!
