If your DSL is "as slow as dial-up," then something is (or some things are) wrong! The MINIMUM speed that AT&T sells is supposed to be 8 or more times faster that the FASTEST dial-up. They have even stopped calling it DSL anymore; now it's "High Speed Internet." AT&T has a 24-hr toll-free tech support # at 1-877-722-3755. Please call them, and if you get someone offshore with an accent you cannot understand, ask for an immediate transfer to an American tech support agent.

There are numerous possible causes for slow speed, and tech support agents specialize in finding out the cause of such problems. You ought to first find out what your ACTUAL speed is by going to some site like www.2wire.com and clicking on the "Speedmeter" on the top of the page. You will get a very fast response and you ought to be able to determine whether the problem is the DSL itself or something on your end. AT&T has its own speedtest site, but it is not always available. You might also go inside the modem's gui, 192.168.0.1 if you have a Speedstream 5100b or 4100, and check out the connection information there.

You may have multiple problems. An unfiltered phone device, or the use of an extension line or a non AT&T provided cable between the modem and the wall jack are frequent causes of the problem. Make sure your modem is not near any strong emi sources, like subwoofers or CRT monitors or TVs.

You may have spyware on your computer; that is the #1 cause of slow browsing speed these days, and, as wonderful as AdAware and Spybot are--and I use both of them--independent testing by PC World has shown that they are not completely effective. You need to defrag your computer and do a complete spyware and antivirus scan before you start troubleshooting hardware. P2P file sharing can also hog your connection, but if you are using that, then you have earned a slow connection. There are too many possible causes of slow speed to get into in a short answer, so the best thing is, as I said, to call the people who are selling you the DSL.
