Exactly what the above post said. So he wouldn't get hanged. But then he put his hand down, and the Phantom got a noose around his neck. That's what he gets for not following directions!

It's also from the book. The Phantom would kill his victims by trying to strangle them with a rope (as you saw earlier where he hung that man on stage) and putting your hand up at the level of your eye so he couldn't try to strangle you.

maybe so he could snatch the phantom's mask? that seems to be a weakness of his.

so he doesn't get hanged. if you keep your hand up there, a noose around your neck won't kill you.
