It's called 'communication'; that street runs 2 ways!!! Talk to the stylist about it not being what you want if it is unsuitable. I bet you leave the salon with them thinking 'she likes it'!!
Lets do some thinking here. You might go into the stylist once ever 4-6 weeks, but more than likely it is in the 8-12 weeks period. Do you fully expect the stylist to remember your last cut considering the number of heads he or she has worked on during the period since your last visit!!!
If you had chemical work (perm, color, etc) this information would be down on your chart but having just a cut would not describe any style or such so what would they have to fall back on -- you and your description of the cut you want!!
This brings me back to communication (in such instances) ... the onus is on you to describe verbally or through picture what you want. They are not mind readers!!
One of the secrets to a hairstylist success is 'creativity'; not unlike a painter or sculpture to put their mark on it. Of course they will experiment to give you a change but if you don't like it SAY SO before it is finished!!
Supposing you have your hair cut 3 - 5 times per year, I would be shocked if a 'younger' person wanted the exact same hair style all the time. Gosh even most 'grandmothers' don't want that!!
If you see a style you want your stylist to duplicate bring them a picture; if the model in the picture has 'obedient' hair and you don't the result will never be the same. Keep the picture and bring it back on your next visit to refresh the stylist's memory.
No I am not a hairdresser although I always wish I had become one so I do have a passion for the business. Since the advent of computers and ease of use, one feature I might incorporate in a salon would be use of photography so the stylist can see the results of a client's last visit visually. Then from there make further suggestions to you for modernization. That way not only the chemical record would be in the client's file but a view of the finished style.
So don't be too hard on your hairdresser without looking at what part of the mis-communtication did you play.

I am a hairdresser and I always ask my clients what they would like best on their head. Before I got into this profession, I hated when I had to wear what others wanted for me, and I think this is lack of respect to one´s opinion and right to choose what they want. But the fact is that many people don´t know what they want, or they want something that is really non flattering to their style, and in this case I give my opinion and advices, but I always let them free to have the final decision.

No, it's not that they want it the easy way. It's that they think they are more sophisticated that you are and will know what will look best on you and therefore think your opinion doesn't count.
If it bothers you then put your foot down or find a new hairdresser.

the first few times you were lucky. ALL barbers and hair stylists will do whatever they want. It's the lure and freedom of the job. You get to wear their mistakes.
