Oh, my god. Wicked, and Son of a Witch, are well on their way to becoming my favorite books ever. The broadway was awesome as well. I just went to see it in March, with my Chorus from school. Two of my other friends have read it, and we talk about it all the time. While they were both great, I liked the storyline of the play better.
In it (the play), Fiyero isn't married, and I like that because it gives a sense of freedom to his character. Even though he does, in fact, become engaged to Glinda. Also the fact that he becomes the Scarecrow after saving Elphaba from the Gale Force. That, and in the book, during the first appearance of his character, he was chased around by a pair of enchanted moose horns. And he ran scared. The play made him seem like a laid back kind of guy.
Also, the fact that the play made the red slippers significant. They were a gift from Frexspar to Nessarose, as they are in the book; but were intended to help her steady herself because she had no arms. In the play, Elphaba enchants them with the Grimmerie to help her sister walk, given that Nessa is disabled, and is in a wheelchair. And the fact that, Nessarose's relationship with Boq ultimately ends in his demise, sort of. She becomes desperately in love with him, and, as is in the book, he is in love with G(a)linda. So she takes his heart. And then Elphaba saves his life as well.
Throughout both the book and the play, Elphaba's transformation was well-shown. Though the book does explain her rebellion against the Unnamed God, the play mentions nothing about it. Though, the best part, is in the end of the play.
Fiyero helps Elphaba stage her own death. GOD!!!! I love that part!
I have never looked at the Wizard of Oz the same way again. Because I know that there is an underlying story.
*****And I swear, the Thropp family is so freaking dysfunctional it's not funny. I lied, yes it is.*****
Hey, good luck when you get to the section entitled CITY OF EMERALDS. It could really mess you up.
HAPPY READING!!! (And I'm sorry if I spoiled anything in the book for you.)

The play was amazing!!!! So much better than the book. The ending was a little different but I think that's what made the play that much better. Dont read Son of a Witch, which is the follow-up to Wicked. Sucked even more. Go see the play if you get a chance though. Absolutely Fabulous!!

I read that book 2 months ago. I enjoyed it, but I've always enjoyed the Wizard of Oz. I loved getting a different perspective on how the characters were, especially the Wicked Witch...was she really Wicked? I've not seen the play, but if they do the book justice, I'd love to see it.

To be honest, I like the story idea, but I think the musical tells it much better than the book does. I think the author made the book much more complicated than it has to be, too many characters and side stories. The musical is much clearer and more entertaining, and it also is more devoted to sticking with Baum's original storyline than the book does.
Also, if you do ending up liking the book, I still suggest you not bother with the sequel, "Son of a Witch." It is absolutely terrible, just written to make money off of the popularity of "Wicked."

Wicked is next on my list, but I have just finished another book by that author called "Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister". This story is about Cinderella, only told from the perspective of one of the stepsisters. I loved it and I can't wait to read all of the books that Gregory McGuire has written. He is a genius!

I just started it a week ago and I love it. I've heard that the play is just as fantastic as the book, but I'm one of the few people who truly believe that the book will always be better. Hopefully the play becomes available on DVD soon.

I absolutely love the book, but have not seen the musical. My sister-in-law saw the musical and read the book, and she thought both were wonderful.

I really liked it, but I know that a lot of people in my book club didn't, so I guess it's one of those love it or hate it kind of things. Once you read it, you should also try to see the musical. It was awesome!

I never got past the first chapter. It just didn't seem Oz-like enough for me.
