It's so annoying. Not abbreviations for long sentances such as "Laughing out loud" (LOL) and "I don't know" (IDK).
But I think the real concern is misspelling the most basic words.
Namely people should certaily stop using the words "Da" "Ur" and "Tha" "Den" "Wit"
It's so easy to spell those words correctly but they show how stupid they are by spelling like a brainless druggie.

I dont think the problem is shorthand; the problem is a basic ignorance of the english language. Currently there exists an extreme type of "linguistic relativism" wherein virtually anything goes, and anyone of a proscriptive bent is told to go pound sand. This is especially prevalent among youth; they may find it cool, but i think that even the dimmest bulb out there knows that in the real world people make judgments about a person's intelligence based on the way they speak and write. Americans are so quick to mock people with foreign accents, yet there is no problem with such phrases as "yo, i be gettin up in dat"? Bill Cosby was right about this much- what good was Brown v. Board of Education when people abuse the english language so brutally? To those who find this "street lingo" or "hip hop dialect" appropriate, realize this: you sound like an absolute moron, and noone (other than a moron) is going to pay you more than minimum wage.

They just don't care. Also when on the net they use codes so that the parents don't see what they are saying. Like

POS is Parent Over Sholder
ASL is Age Sex Location

those are the only ones that I can think of right now and I'm not a kid. I was taught about grammar and spelling.

There are other things out there to that they don't care about. Learing how to do math the long way (with out a calcuator). I was in school around the time that using it (calcuator) was the way to go over the long way. That was back in the 90's.

Then there is the respect part. But that can be for another question.

Some schools don't place a high enough emphasis in spelling and grammar. I was so glad when we moved here 20 years ago because this school system does. I know I drove my sons nuts insisting they correct their spelling and grammar before turning in their homework assignments. I've also done the same thing with my grandchildren. Parents, grandparents, and teachers must work together to help the kids see the importance of correct spelling and grammar.

Instant/text messaging shorthand drives me nuts! Some employers have sent their employees to remedial English classes because this shorthand was creeping into their business letters and reports.

Kids are very intelligent and sometimes they just don't care because their is no structure in the home. Some parents don't make sure their homework is done and they don't sit and review it. It's just not the teacher's responsibility to teach but a parent's responsibility as well. If a kid had caring parents who truly cared about his or her education that kid would soar like an eagle. To every kid who reads this, MAKE YOUR PARENTS CARE. It's not enough to have born you, but its their job to instruct and to create structure in your lives. Internet lingo is something that can be used shorthand, but I think kids are smart enough to separate the two.

Because they are stupid and don't have a good education. And want low paying jobs, with a bunch of kids and 3 or 4 women to support with no money. Loose their teeth because they can't afford a dentist. Get disgusted because they are stupid and use drugs so they think they are smart. Then some other country with smart kids going to school will take all the good jobs and finally take over the country.

lol..great question! Don't blame it on the kids! I have friends that are over 50 and type using shorthand. It's disturbing to me too, but what can you do? I do know that in my business, if people send me email with too many shortcuts, I don't read them. Also, my people need to answer email and memos in the good ole' English grammar, or they can push brooms on the floors. Have you read memo's from your child's school recently? The school administration is awful too. They misspell, don't punctuate, and don't proof read anything. Just be polite and smile! Good Luck

I see it more as a phase, something to tie a generation of preteens together. Back in the 90's white kids from the suburbs would speak ebonics to each other, but 10 years or so later that all seems to have passed.

I think we have to blame the notion of text messages. You have to wrilte out your message using a really infuriating system. Even I, who do not believe in creating a gibberish version of English, wind up using some of the shortcuts.

What makes it really difficult to read is that many of the writers also try to imitate an accent, and while the phonetics are fairly accurate, it creates a barrier between me and them.

I've got no suggestions. Do you?

I think that alot of them don't care about anything, let alone puntuation and spelling. I think that instant media is part of the problem, I never watched DVD's or played games on a laptop during family roadtrips. I got to watch the country roll by in a hot, un-airconditioned car like everyone else who is 30 or older used to.

Not much, Seems the kids of today and us as well are using short cuts to write.

Recently I read an article about kids writing their high school essays, how most of the teachers would not allow them to use ty for thank you and so on.

Great for the teachers.
