While the other posted answer was partially correct, many of the parts they mentioned do NOT have to be removed. Yes, the motor has to come out but you can get to the transmission from the bottom of the motor because the cases are horizontally split. With some knowledgable help, you could do it.

It's not a simple job. The motor has to be removed from the frame. All engine covers and oil pan. Flywheel, clutch, oil pump, starter motor and split the crankcase. Not a job for the inexperienced. Some special tools are required.

Not to be disrespectful to arizona, but the flywheel has to be taken off to remove the stator which is bolted to the top and bottom half of the crankcase. The clutch has to be removed to disassemble the shift linkage. The clutch is mounted on the main shaft of the trani and has to be removed if you're changing the main shaft. The oil pan has to be removed to help align the shift forks when reassembling the crankcase. The starter motor has to be removed to get at the upper crankcase bolts.
