The best advice I ever got was for me to take care of myself FIRST. And when I want to accomplish anything to not worry about trying to impress anything for anyone else. I have had issues all my life of trying to get a certain family member to approve of what I'm doing. Well.. I've done quite a bit for myself. Quit drinking, smoking and doing drugs.. Went back to college and got an AA degree with honors. Lost 200 lbs. My parents never once in the past 22 years of sobriety EVER came to see me get a recovery chip. Nobody in my family even thought to attend my college graduation.. It just wasn't important enough. I was given the messages all my life that no matter what I did it isn't gonna be good enough.. so how I responded to that was..well screw it.. I'm not even gonna start. By taking the advice that what I do is for me and to hell with the rest of them I feel proud for myself about my accomplishments. My family is pretty messed up.. Doesn't mean I have to participate anymore.

I recall three important pieces of advice:
1) Don't allow people to bully you.
Kick their *** if they try.
2) Travel as much as you can.
There are so many cultures, foods, languages, religions and different ways of thinking to experience. Get out there and experience the world. You will become a better person for it.
3) Education is the best investment you can make.
It is an investment in yourself.
