In the original story, all of the rangers were tricked and ambushed. The local native Indians found the bodies and saw he was still alive and nursed him back to health, He was the last ranger. Tonto became his friend and companion. Tonto was not a ranger and could never be, because he was indigenous and not white. That was the way it was.

tonto wasnt a ranger. he was the long ranger to survive the ambush that wiped out the other rangers that were with him. the name also comes from tonto. after the ranger wakes after the attack tonto tells him he prepared an extra grave to make the bad guys think they got all the rangers. " crook kill five rangers. tonto make six graves. crook think you die with others.you only ranger left, you lone ranger". or something like that.
