The are native to the land that Israel now occupies. Interestingly enough, before the UN made a state for the Jews after WW2, the Palestinians were willingly selling their land to the Jews of the Zionist movement. So it seems that if the rest of the world hadn't interfered with Israel and Palestine, the two people could have (maybe) lived in relative peace. Of course, there are still the problems that have always existed between different tribes of semetic religious groups, but at least the conflict wouldn't be entirely political.

Another thing, Palestine actually was a country before it was Israel. Unfortunately it was not recognized by the UN which makes it much easier to pretend the people there don't exist.

The conflict we now see is between a group of people who want the land that is rightfully theirs and a group of people who were told to go live in an area that was given to them. This could be compared the story in the old testament of the Bible where God tells the Hebrews to go into the promised land and conquer the people who were already living there. We'll see how it will all turn out eventually, but it will be difficult to achieve peace in that area of the world.

What we today call Palestinians are Arabs from Palestine. Like all Arabs some of their predeccessors originated from the Arabian Peninsula, exploded across the Middle East and North Africa between 660 and 750 AD, and interbred with the various ethnic groups that lived in those areas creating the race we today know as Arab. So there is a good chance todays Palestinians could trace some of their lineage back to the Aramaic and Hellenic peoples of the Eastern Mediterranian as well as the Arabs of the Arabian Peninsula.

Palestine is the hebrew word for the region.

Prior to the formation of Israel, the entire region was under British control. About 30% was purchased to create the nation of Israel. The rest eventually became Jordan and surrounding territories.

Some of the people who used to live in the region objected to Israeli control. So Israel offered to further divide the land and create Palestine as a new homeland for the non-Israeli residents.
The anti-Israelis refused, and enlisted the neighboring countries into attacking Israel. Over and over again.

So, to answer your question more directly, the Palestinians are everyone who used to live in Jordan, Israel, and the surrounding occupied territories. And there is no Palestine as a country because all offers by Israel to create one have been rejected.

The Palestinian people did not exist before 1948. That's when the UN divided up the land of Israel into 2 states - Israel and Jordan. Israel was further divided into 2 parts - Jewish and Arab. The Arabs did not like this and when the British pulled out of Israel, they invaded the Jewish parts of the state. Israel proceeded to conquer the whole of Israel, but then gave part of it back to the Arabs.
The Palestinians are the Arabs who lived in those conquered parts (known as the Gaza Strip, the Golan Heights and the West bank). They are originally from Jordan, and most of their relatives live there. Jordan, however does not recognize them as being part of them.
In the past few years, Israel has been pulling out of the Gaza Strip and the West bank.

One thing most people do not realize is how tiny this whole area is. Israel is double the size of Rhodde Island, and there are 5 million people living there (both Jewish and Arab). There are 1 million Palestinians. There are 7 Arab nations surrounding Israel (Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Jordan, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia) who have hundreds of millions of people living in them.

The historic Philistines (Hebrew plishtim פלשתים) were a people who inhabited the southern coast of Canaan around the time of the arrival of the Israelites, their territory being named Philistia in later contexts. Their origin has been debated among scholars, but modern archaeology has suggested early cultural links with the Mycenean world in mainland Greece. Though the Philistines adopted local Canaanite culture and language before leaving any written texts.
