Congratulations! You are officially living my dream!
Be careful though, major lables tend to get greedy. They may demand too much out of you and if you can't handle the pace they will consider your contract void.
Good luck and I hope to hear a song by you on my local radio!

i'm a guitar instructor, i've played in bands, i have my own recording studio now, and i've been offered contracts before also.
be very very careful about this stuff. what they try to hide from you is that you're signing a loan. they'll give you X amount of dollars, but you need to pay it all back before you make any real money. if you get $10,000 from them to make a cd, you go spend it on a studio and recording /engineering/ production /instruments /promotion /packaging, etc, and then you need to earn $10,000 to pay them back. and if you dont earn the whole thing, they dont care, you'll need to work a normal job to pay them back before you can make any real money. so, unless you can book a lot of gigs where you'll be making a few thousand at a time (you'll need to pay yourself, the members of the band, the sound guy, the promotional people, the booking agent, etc) i'd be really really careful about signing anything.
if you can get a cd done with your own money, and get out there and establish a name for yourself, and make money on your own, then you can have bargaining room with them. you'll make more that way, and wont have as much pressure to do what they want.

Do NOT sign the contract immediately! Take it to your OWN lawyer. Often, labels will try to steal your rights to the songs. Go to a contract lawyer who specializes in entertainment law. If you need the name of one, I will be happy to provide you with some names.

Remember, make the songs your own. Don't let the company take advantage of your talent, because what you think is important. Congratulations, by the way. This is an awesome oppurtunity.
Use your heart, and don't be afraid to say "That's my song!" because you deserve to gloat a little. Or a lot. :-D

Well I am a poet and the one piece of advice I have about writing is to always make it come from the heart because it always effects how others percieve it and how you are able to transcend it to the listner. People can tell when its real. Stay true to yourself. Take inspiration from your life.
