Russia is not an enlightened modern democratic state. They are more comparable to the USA of the 1920's.
They are short sighted, corrupt and not extending full citizen rights to every citizen. They are however extremely powerful with incredible future potential.
And like the USA of the 1920's they have bitter lingering memories of succession struggles and internal wars and will not allow anyone to disturb their "manifest destiny".
Chechnya had better learn to deal with their independence issues more like Canada's Quebec, or they will lose everything against overwhelming and unrelenting force.
Better to live with compromise than die uselessly. And killing innocent children only put their cause back for at least a generation.

Because they don't want to be like America (fighting for freedom)as they have done in Hiroshima and Nagasaki(they have freed the land from humans) their glorious freedom fight against Vietnamese peasant's, women ,children causing more than a million deaths raping them and what not,and as they are doing so through their corporates throughout the world freeing them from all their material wealth and belongings.Freeing the earth from purity and cleansing the ecosystem with toxins and freeing oil from middle east supporting israel freedom lovers and cleansing nations from nationalism.

I agree with Bob ! they kill innocent people, kidnapped schools and theaters! a group of people cannot make a country , if you are living in a city, you cannot decide to take the independence!you are living in a country with laws.

I believe that Chechnya is rich in Oil. Look it up on Yahoo and see if you can verify this. If I'm correct that would answer your question.
