Dracus, what makes you think there up there for your benefit anyway?..Carl Sagan once said,[with his hands full of beach sand] "Ther are more stars in the cosmos than there are grains of sand on all the beaches of the world!"He was wrong of course,! But if you look at our galaxy alone, there are 400 thousand million stars in it!..There are hundreds of millions of galaxys like ours out there!..We are discovering many stars close to us have planets orbiting them This is probably the norm, there are maybe 2-5 billion planets in our galaxy alone!..Feeling a bit insignificant yet?..What do the stars mean to us?..Not much really, unless one close by decides to go "BANG".The dog star Sirius is a good candidate, the gamma ray blast should leave only the cockroaches to inherit the earth!..

From our perspective here on Earth, the sky appears to be filled with stars. And true, there are trillions and trillions in the universe. But to put things into perspective, if we, here on Earth decided to visit the closest star(Alpha Centari), it would take us over 40,000 years to get there using today's rocket technology. So from that perspective, there's not that many stars around. However, when you look up at night and see the sky filled with stars, this should tell you just how really big the universe is. It's truly unimaginatively large.

Well, yes. . . the Sun is a star. And without the cycle of galactic recycling where Stars and born and die and release matter out into the universe, the planet Earth wouldn't have ever been created.

The sun is a star. It heats and lights the earth. There may be other life forms out there that stars effect similarly. They produce elements. Heavy elements are formed in the big stars. They do not need to actually help us.

Yes, stars do help the average person. We all are made of stardust. That's right, every atom in your body was at one time, a part of a star.
