IT all depends on the container you choose. I

There are manyLayouts to choose,the tricky thing about Swing is which Layout you should choose. But once your experience it will be as easy as drawingit by hand. You could use Panels, and apply a bottom panel at the container level

And from that panel , you insert another layout like a grid layout.

I suggest to use the IDE Called http://www.netbeans.org/products/ide/screenshots.html

Netbeans already have a Swing Gui Builder which is EASY and clean. It is nice :)
