There are some 13SEER units that have a higher pressure fluid inside. so they may need to replace the pipes between the inside and outside units.
You should definitely get a second opinion. Other people may have different insights or different equipment available.
One thing is to be sure they replace the inside and the outside units. If the only replace the outside, you won't get the higher efficiency that they advertise!

Is he referring to the ductwork? I'd get a second opintion. 13 seer is now the federal minimum standard for energy efficiency. Perhaps this guy is trying to make some extra cash by trying to scare you into replacing all your ductwork. 10 years is not that old for ductwork, not at all. It just doesn't make sense that raising your seer from 12 to 13 would put that much extra strain on things. I smell a rat.

your duct work does not come into consideration regarding 12-13 seer... unless the ductwork is falling apart...then reairs would be needed. line set piping replacement makes good sense when replaciing the condenser and the air handler. size of cooling equipment is based upon square footage. for residential... approximately six hundred square feet requires 12,000 btu's and 12,000 btu's equates to one ton. these figures can be adjusted with the amount of glass exposer. get estimates and evaluations from at least three hvac contractors. check with the department of consumer protection about their complaint record and if they have valid licenses. all states have a web site that will allow you to do this on line. then ask for references from each contractor...call some of them and ask about the quality of the installation...cleanliness, professionalism, politeness, etc.

13 seer is the minimum you can buy now, unless your supplier has 12 seer available from last year. Good Luck

13 seer is the norm and u can not get anything below 13 in our market here in nc...... 13 is the min. we install in new houses....upgrading to 13 has nothing to do with ur duct. change out the air handler and the line set and u will be fine!
