Traps and poisons are somewhat effective - but they are messy, and more rats may come. Far more effective: get a BLACK SNAKE (or a King Snake) - they snake will take care of the rats for you.
If you don't like this solution, get one of those ultra-sonic pest eliminators. (be sure to get one tuned for rats, not insects) - they work fairly well.

Oh my, this can be a problem. We had one get into our basement last summer and we tried all kinds of things. He/she was too smart to take bait off a snap trap and wouldn't go into a live trap. We finally got it by putting out some sticky paper made for that purpose. I can't remember what it was called but we got it at a feed store. It's like fly paper only bigger. We put some bait in the middle of it and the rat got stuck when it went after it. Even though I didn't like having it in my home, I didn't want to see it suffer so my husband took care of it.
