There was an Eddie and the Cruisers Part II, and that's where the whole faking of the death comes into play. (Otherwise it would be a real short movie!)

Eddie and the Cruisers was not a real band, but the song from the movie was released in their name. I think it was called "On the Dark Side." It became such a hit, that the credit was given to the real band shortly after, which I believe to be John McCaffety.

Sorry but it was just a well made "fictional" band for the movie storyline, done as a "what if", which could allude to Elvis, or Buddy Holly or Richie Valens or any deceased rock and roll legend.

The actual music in the movie was done by John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown band, and as far as I know, there's still someone touring under that name.

Wow, that is funny, I was just looking at the soundtrack record the other day, and I knew that the movie was partly true but I didn't know that part!
