try retail (clothing/department stores, toy stores etc.) You learn first hand how to deal with different types of people and situations and there's usually more areas for you to work in, plus you don't go home smelling like beef.

Sorry but the fast food industry is the best place to start because it will help you in your dealings with people. And they are a good reference for moving up the ladder.

We were told by the manager that if you can hack McDonalds or any other restaurant, you'll have a better edge in retail. Many retail shops won't look at first timers. Fast food will hire anybody at the drop of a hat.

try retail, I guarrentee you'll hate it. Damn customers think they're gods when they walk through the door. I don't know how old you are or where you are from, but for a first job I would try some kind of retail store like walmart, meijer if you're in the midwest, home depot and lowes pay pretty good. Just be prepared for snooty customers. The other option is fast food, your attitude towards fast food is the same as mine, I refuse to work there. My first job was working for burlington coat factory. They put me in the leather coat department, I still can't figure out why lol. Good luck on your job hunt!

Well, even though you said no fast food, I'm still going to give my original answer. Sonic's Drive-In... start tomorrow and in a few years you can own one. There's quite a bit of money in owning one and the start up fee is only like $2000. Best wishes

Grocery store and other retail are good place and have also training. If you want a supportive environment, pick a small business that needs part time help, like a veterinarian"s offices.

Why not burger joints?

It taught me to appreciate and respect the people who do those kinds of jobs.
