I would say your doctor wouldn't recommend this test if its not necessary. If you have a persistent sore throat and all other tests do not answer the question, it is best to have the endoscopy. Persistent sore throat can be caused by polyps or even cancer... so better be safe than sorry. Have the test.

A sore throat would not prevent you from having the test. I have assisted with this test many times. Your throat ...sore or not will be sprayed with a medicated spray to numb it...we use a spary called cetacaine or one called hurricaine...in addition to that you will be given IV medication to make you somewhat drowsy but not totally asleep...consious sedation. Expect to be connected to a heart monitor and blood pressure cuff and pulse ox line...these things can be a little scary to someone who is not familiar with the test but they are only there for the purpose of monitoring your vital signs and ensuring your safety and well being throughout the test. You will also be wearing a little oxygen during the test because the scope that the doctor uses to look around will put just a little pressure on your esophagus and because it is in front of your airway you are given just a little oxygen so that your body will not notice the effect of the pressure from the scope. The procedure itself...actually being scoped...is relatively short and should be completed in 10 minutes or so ...maybe less depending on what the doctor finds.
Good luck with your exam and I hope you are feeling better soon.

It depends on what is causing the sore throat and how badly you need the test. If this is a routine test, I would postpone it. If you are having major problems with swallowing that require the test then I would go ahead with the appointment. Be sure to call the facility that is performing the test to talk to them about it.
