how can i keep my apartment cool?i live on the top floor, during the morning hours its nice and comfortable. but once it gets to be about 2 or 3 the temperature rises, FAST, it can get to be around 90 easily in here. we have fans in the main room, our daughters room, and our room. but they don't seem to help much. and it doesn't seem that we have air conditioning in these apartements (which i find totally outlandish). we have a thermostat and i set it to the temp i want it to hover around and it only seems to be a fan that is blowing and that certainly doesn't help. i pretty much keep all the blinds closed. and the house as dark as possible. moving to another apartment is far from feasible for us, terminating our lease early and paying the penalties would kick our butts. i'm getting worried about my small children. is there anything that we can do?

talk to your landlord about the a/c...it might not be working correctly...also, open windows and put pans by them, this lets the air circulate better instead of just moving the "hot" air in the room around

Because you are on the top floor, all the heat from the levels below you are rising- heat rises, even through floors & ceilings. You're getting all the heat from the other apartments.

About the only way is to make sure you keep the rooms as dark as possible to keep out the heat from outside, use fans, and AC if possible. You might want to have fans in the windows sucking air OUT in the warmer rooms, to get rid of a lot of the hot water.

Fans are your best bet, though. AC is expensive, but if you can use even 1 window unit, it would help. It doesn't need to keep everything super cool, it just needs to keep things somewhat cooler. A dehumidifier would help get the humidity out of the air, too, which helps keep things from feeling -as- warm.

Well one look to see if there is a filter on the inlet of the heater\AC, if there is then you may need to replace it. this may be restricting the air flow, also you can open a window at each end of the apartment and turn the fans on this will allow the air to flow thru the room and cool it but will not make it real cool but a little more bearable, this will also help pull the air from the ac thru the vents. But most likely you have a clogged filter on the air vent by the fan housing or the ac needs servicing and you will probably have to call your land lord there...

To cool things down quickly, get a big bowl of ice and put a fan in front of it. It'll blow the cool air coming off of the ice out into the room. For more long-term cooling, I recommend looking into window air conditioners. They're not too expensive and they just fit into a small window and keep your apartment cool!

There are a number of things you can do, first check w/your landlord and make sure you don't have ac. Window tint or foil/tint combination for windows facing the sun.
window fan blowing out with other windows open creates good cross ventilation.
Small window ac's are not very expensive, either to buy or operate, can be used in combination with fans.

the fans you are using in your apartment should maybe be placed so the air is exiting your apt. instead of just pushing it around. Try placing the fans in the window so the air pushes towards outdoors. This helps. Also keep your blinds/curtains closed as much as possible.
