I leave one penny on top of the receipt. Just so she knows it wasn't an accident that we forgot to tip her.
I waited tables for years. I know how long things take to cook and I know what it takes to get it to my table hot. I will factoring the amount of tables she has and if one is extra difficult.

The classic snub for a crappy waiter is to leave a tip of one penny, out in plain sight. When I was active in the business world, that was like a slap across the mouth to the waiter. Just for general info, that same penny left under the plate signals the waiter that you appreciated their service, but simply don't have the money to leave a decent tip. That's 20th century stuff, and may not apply any longer, I truly don't know.

If it werent for Tips Waiters and Waitresses could not get by. as most are in one of the few professions that does not pay even the minimum wage. Consider whether the bad experience was the fault of the server and voice your complaints to the manager but you should leave a tip. would hate to think there's a baby out there not getting fed because their lousy mother had a bad day :-s

Depends on how crappy. If he/she obviously isn't trying to makes things better for my party, I will not give a good tip. If things happening are beyond his/her control than I can understand a bad day....since I was a waitress for three years.
But, if he/she simply has a bad attitude with prompt or sloppy service, I will not leave anything. Good personality is a must!

A tip is usually a thanks for good service.. or a way of rating good or bad service... when rating service on a scale of 1-10 then tens would get 15% gratuity and the 1's would get 1%... I also tend to look at the whole picture too.. if another table has given the poor server a really hard time they might be frazzled and cant help it.. in those cases i still tip pretty good.. just to let em know that we all aint buttheads.. lol

Being a waiter or waitress is a very tough job. If the waitstaff is rude only leave a dime.
If they are just slow or unorganized leave 5% of your bill versus the normal 15%.

If the waiter or waitress is really crappy, I leave a nickle. That is so they know I didn't just drop a penny.
I had one that was terrible at Buffalo Wild Wings. She didn't bring me a straw or the diet sugar. She mixed up my order. She forgot my husband's steak sauce and never checked on us after bringing us our order. Plus she charged us for French Fries that neither of us ordered.

Always, I sometimes will give her less (10 or 15% instead of 20%) if she is downright rude. Servers don't make minimum wage as a hourly rate. (At least in my state.) Their job is pretty thankless and can be very demanding. You never know either what is going on in their lives that might be contributing to them being "crappy" I was on a date once, our waitress was the worst. The man I was with was an a$$ about it...I knew the woman vaguely...enough to know her husband was dying of cancer, they were on the verge of bankruptcy from his inability to work, she was taking care of her (I heard...demanding) elderly mother, and had two younger children...He stiffed her...I left him @ the restaurant...Wonder if he's still waiting???

Yeah, but I leave a really crappy one, because sometimes I feel that this is worse than not leaving a tip at all. But, I am sure some will disagree.

My opinion is.. if it is really bad service... why do you stay?
If it is a Denny's type... you get the service you pay for...
If it is a place where your meal is $15.00 plus, then you should
expect better service.
15-20% is standard,,, which usually they have to tip-out to others working the table.
10% if it is just really poor all the way around... But, I will always talk to the management, and maybe get something off the total bill.
Good Luck!!!

If the food is bad but the service is good, I still leave a tip because the server can't help the flaws of the cook, but it the service is bad then they don't want a tip very bad so I don't give them one.
