Wow how heartless. This guy wants you to be his wife and you want to break up with voice mail. Obviously you said yes and took the ring so guess what you made a commitment and the honorable way to leave this relationship is to do it face to face period. That way you can explain why and you both get closure. Be fair not fearful. If for some reason you can not do it in person like fear of personal safety they write a letter tell the truth and apologize for going back on the promise with and leave it in his apartment/house with the ring.

I don't think that leaving that on his voicemail is fair at all. If you two were engaged to be married, at least give him the respect enough to tell him face to face. But, if he cheated on you, then that's another ball game. The voicemail thing would be deserved.

Unless you're 12 or in fear of your life, you need to sit him down, in a non-public forum and explain to him that you are returning his ring, and ending the engagement.
It's not necessary to place blame on him. You can accept responsibility for the decision and say that you realized that you aren't ready to commit to any relationship right now. You feel badly and you know it's coming out of the blue, but you think it would be unfair to go another day without being honest about it.
Feel free to use the guy-line of: I'm just not ready for this like I thought I was. It isn't you.

You owe your fiancee a better reason for leaving him that just wussing out and sticking the ring in an envelope. It is hard to do a face to face breakup, but he wanted to marry you. You owe him a better breakup than a dear john letter..

i would like to know how and why you ever got engaged with this person in the first place if you feel that you cannot even talk to him face to face to explain to him the reasons why you are leaving...would you like it if someone did that to you?...the best way to tell him is to talk to him and share your feelings with him...like first of all...why you are leaving him...i mean you can't just disappear into thin air...it's just not right...i too have a difficult time with confrontation...but for god sakes...this is an instance where i think it's absolutely necessary...you cannot leave a voice mail...that is so shallow...don't ruin the poor guy for someone else...give him the common courtesy and respect that you would wish for yourself...would you want to come home to a voice mail like that?...you should sit him down...and talk to him...btw...why ARE you leaving anyway?...do you even know?...perhaps you should think about that...???????????

The only fair and proper way to end a relationship is an open and frank face-to-face conversation. Anything else is ridicilous and offensive.

You should tell him in person because in the end you and your fiancee will atleast have had some form of communication.

Look him in the eye.
If he has been violent with you before, or if he's been unfaithful to you, then your idea might be OK, but unless he did something really terrible, I think you should look him in the eye when you tell him this bad news, maybe tell him to sit down first.
