I think it applies to clutter .. any form of clutter, physical or mental, material or spiritual. For instance, if I get rid of clutter in my home, I have less stuff, but more time, more space, more clarity, more appreciation of the stuff that I now can finally reach and use. If I have a cluttered schedule chock-full every day, and I cut out some of the things, I have less to do, but I have cut out the less important things and will have more in terms of quality time with the things that do matter.
That's mainly what this phrase is about .. letting go of the unimportant things in our life, so that we can give more of our lives to the stuff that really matters.
It often doesn't seem to make sense .. until you try the de-cluttering in your life, your home, your mind .. and suddenly you find your life before was suffocating and now suddenly it's so much easier, clearer, happier .. and that's when you understand how "less is more".

The less makeup a woman uses the more of her natural beauty can shine through... but on the other hand the more her bust size is the more she has to hold up your plate while watching tv!

I guess it applies to "unsatisfied desire". Half an orange taste better than the whole one, let alone 2 of them.
In other words the less you have of something you really need, the more you appreciate it.
Unless is too little and you are just furious.

One of the ways this applies is to negative things that cause negative consequences... for example less calories is more healthy. Less heat is more cold. Less weight is more skinny.
Make sense???
More is more is the opposite.

It applies to many things. The amount of makeup or perfume for a woman to wear, the amount of seasoning to put in most foods, the amount of talking you do in a conversation, the amount of things you put around your house to decorate - understating things generally leaves room for appreciation of the real beauty of whatever is behind it.

Less is more comes from an idea that you don;t need every gizmo and gadget to make your life fulfilling.
When you have less (in the way of material possessions) you have more (in the way of emotional satisfaction) in your life.

Less is more in instances of things like...when you see someone wearing 'plumbers' pants'...or with mosquito bites...flatulence in public...strong perfume..strong body odour - things like that.
More is more with things like...chocolate. Kisses. The laughter of children. The smell of honeysuckle in spring. Cleansing rain at the end of a long, hot day.

Speaking of makeup on a woman...it usually looks better if she just has a little on. LESS makeup IS MORE appealling

What came to my mind first was friends. I prefer a few good trusted ones over a large variety of acquaintances.
And more is more when I then can spend more time with them.
(am going to have to think about that one MORE)

It applies to makeup, jewelry and ornamentation on clothes. More is more applies to anything to do with money.
