To make this descision, you need to take a look at what you plan on doing with the computer.
Buy a Macintosh if you plan on using it for:
Web surfing
Graphic Design
Office Work
Buy a Windows PC if you plan on using it for:
Games
Sound/Video Editing
Web Surfing
Graphic Design
Office Work
You may ask, "With the above reasons, why would I consider a Mac?". Well, a Macintosh is a lot less vulnerable to viruses and spyware, while a Windows machine can do a lot more it's vulnerable. But, really, if you're not a very advance computer geek, you will probably have a much easier time adjusting to a Windows machine.

Go for Windows XP........... there's stackloads more software available for it, whereas looking for MAC software is like looking for a needle in a haystack + I get the impression from some Mac users that a requirement of owning a MAC is to have your head stuck up your ***.
Microsoft are doing their best to make security at the core of their operating systems now, rather than an after thought...... check out the next version of Windows: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/
IF ur into Gaming, check this out:

And as far as I recall, Windows based PC's are more "upgrade friendly" http://www.overclockers.co.uk/

I use a windows box, and Linux. My parents have to Mac's and are very happy with them. Frankly, I would go with a Mac at the moment if you are not into Linux. The next generation of Windows is getting pretty scary right now.

This depends on what you are going to do with your new puter..
Graphics, then Mac, Word processing, etc, Windows...
I, of course, own a windows pc.. I have for 23 years, and the system is finally stable enough to brag on..
(knock wood)
There are proponents for both, but, in the end, it's a choice you have to make for yourself.
Good luck!

I would definately go for a Mac. They can do EVERYTHING a Windows computer can, and you can even install Windows XP on the new Intel based ones! So, you can have the best of both worlds, right on your Mac.

If you want to go hardcore with gaming and video editing, go MAC.
If you want a computer good for the web and fairly easy to use, go WINDOWS.
OSX (mac) is more stable than Windows, but its harder to get used to.
