I think the important thing is to do what you love and what gives you fulfillment.
Your question reminded me of a book that will give you a good in-depth look at working with animals. It's called "Real People Don't Own Monkeys"

You can do both at the same time (as in grooming). But none of it really pays, unless you own a trendy salon...

working with animals may pay better depending on your level of education -- and animals are nicer to work with people are never satisfied, esp with their hair.
