What anti-virus does is, it finds n pulls out the suspected files from your system (PC) and keeps them at a location(path) such that these infected files do not mingle with ones which are fine (not infected) and cause further damage to system. The act/process of segregating the infected or suspected files and keeping them at a location where from they would not interfere with other working files on system is called as "Quarantining".
Just as its better to remove one rotten mango in a crate rather than spoiling the entire crate of mangoes - we Quarantine the sole rotten mango. Hope that helps you understand.

I'm satisfied with what others said. To be in mannered terms, quarantined objects never get direct access to be executed.
You must have observed frequently that .exe files run directly but not .dat or .txt or else.
A quarantined file is the unexecutable version of a suspicious file, may be a virus. That is neither .exe nor .com or .bat or any other executable form.
You are no stupid with not knowing this. This qurantine methodology is new with antiviruses and is still unknown to many software engineers as well. Now I believe you are aware of it.

LOL don't worry, your not the only one, and when in doubt, let's look for a dictionary..
quar·an·tine ( P ) Pronunciation Key (kwôrn-tn, kwr-)
n.
A period of time during which a vehicle, person, or material suspected of carrying a contagious disease is detained at a port of entry under enforced isolation to prevent disease from entering a country.
A place for such detention.
Enforced isolation or restriction of free movement imposed to prevent the spread of contagious disease
So, it's probably kept under enforced isolation to prevent the..err..virus from entering your computer.

When a virus cannot be removed from your computer it is usually quarantined by the virus program. Which means it is still on your computer but "isolated" from doing any harm to it.

it separates the virus from the rest of the environment so it isn't transmitted to another person.
when quarantined, the virus would then be "cleaned" and will not infect anyone else...in the quarantine, the doctors would wear special outfits so they aren't affected either

well, in a simple term means to put you under monitoring with a very restricted freedom for a period of time, to making sure that you are virus free or infection free.
