The "King of Comedy", "Being There", or "The Apostle"
Taken at face value they are entertaining, but all have enough depth to aid you in contemplating life or society and your place in it.
"Being There" stars Peter Sellers who commented of the part that it was what he had been waiting on his whole lifetime and it required his whole lifetime to aquire the ability to play the role. Try this movie if you want to laugh at the absurdity of life.
"The King of Comedy" is not nearly as deep but offers some very interesting characters and thoughts on celebrity and the worship of it. Try this movie if you want to laugh at people who are worse off than you.
"The Apostle" is NOT a movie based on a biblical character! It is a thought provoking film starring Robert Duvall as a "Holy Roller" preacher with a drinking problem and an out of control life. This movie was a labor of love by Robert Duvall. He worked on the script for years and honed it to perfection. It took him over 20 years to get the movie made, but he always believed in it. He was nominated for best actor for this film and in my oppinion was ROBBED when the academy gave it to Jack Nicholson for his work in the insipid comedy "As Good as it Gets" with Helen Hunt. This film is about a life gone astray and the long road to redemption. It is punctuated by many examples of those seeking a quick fix and how that doesn't work. Duval offers the best performance I have ever seen on film. Try this movie if you are looking for some answers.

Cinderella Man put things in perspective. It made me feel inspired ans greatfull fo the things I have. "My name is Bill W." is good if the problem is drinking. "Clean and Sober" if Its drugs. I'm not being presumtuous, but when I felt like that about life, it was because of the alcohol and drugs I was consuming.
