The only thing I see wrong with cursing all the time is that when stuff really starts to go wrong, you've got no reserves. I mean, my mom cusses all the time, so nobody pays attention. But I hardly ever curse, so if I do, then everybody knows I'm really mad.

Cursing or cussing is based in superstition, of course. How many people today believe that they can be cursed by other people? George Carlin said it best; there are no bad words, only bad intentions, and this is an axiom I believe in strongly. It is the intention behind the words that causes people to look at you strangely, and cover their children's ears in fear and disgust when you let fly with a colorful phrase from your local merchant marine.

In New Orleans, we have some traditions which govern this kind of thing. With our closest friends we often say the most horrible things to one another and laugh ourselves silly: however, when there is someone whom we simply cannot stand and would rather they spontaneously combust than speak one word, we are the height of politeness and cordiality. In short, if we treat you in a genteel fashion...watch out. The words are the same, but the intentions make the difference. In the proper context, "Good afternoon, and how are you today?" becomes as horrible as "F*@% you, motherf*@%!^g @&$t!!!!!"

Is it? It probably depends on the situation. I suspect many people are neutral about cursing in the privacy of one's own home especially if no one else is there to hear it.

Cursing not only reflects the negative side of one's character but is disrespectful when directed at anyone.

It's considered a sign of a poor vocabulary, in that you couldn't come up with the words to express yourself so you use an expletive.

Though sometimes they are exactly what you mean and are appropriate. It's just excessive swearing makes one look unintelligent.

Take the word **** for example. This is used quite often as a word substitute, usually as a noun by people who lack the vocabulary to properly express themselves. It frequently denotes anger as well.
