suggetions for what?

Any decent modem will suffice.Go to Best Buy or Circuit City. Any cable modem will do too and I use linksys routers if you're looking for wireless access. I use symantec (norton) antivirus and I am happy with it. I also use sygate for a firewall.

Take it to one of those puter geek stores for help with the modem, i use VCOM's system suite 6 for the antivirus... spyware doctor is good too but doesnt have the repair and clean up options that system suite has...im sure they have a newer program by now, i just continually update mine

Well for the anti-virus go with AVG its free off the internet or if you wanna buy on use E - Trust..the have a firewall and anti spyware too..tho u nedd two antispywares incase one doesn't get everything in that case ..go to lavasoft and dl ad-aware..that works mircles...umm as afar as a modem check office max, staples and other stores like wal mart..they should have it in these places. hope i could help.

Modems can be bought dirt cheap on ebay. Your ISP will probably provide one when you sign up anyway.

No anti-virus software can easily be fixed by downloading some (I recommend Ad-Aware and Spyware Search and Destroy) or buying from one of the big names (eg Norton)

Whatever you feel your new to you laptop needs, purchase it. You must have saved a few bucks between the price of new and price of refurbished, sooo, go for it.

does it have a cd or dvd drive?
maybe you can burn what you need on a cd from another computer and load it that way

or even better, does it have an ethernet port?
hook it into a router that is hooked to dsl or a cable modem
go to download.com and get what you need
windows startup inspector
ad aware
avg or avast for virus

scandisk and defrag
