It refers to a dream where you feel that your life force is being choked out of your body. You will experience a paralysis and shortness of breath. It feels like you have a weight directly on your chest and it is very scary.
The scientific explanation is that during REM sleep your body is indeed paralysed and sometimes parts of the brain will wake up at different times giving you a sense of awareness and physicaly no ability to move.

I have experienced a mild form of this where I think that I am trying to move and I wake up feeling like I have just jumped from a small height.
Here's a link to check out that will explain the two sides in further detail.

I know two people who have experienced this and know it as the "night hag". It's where you are in REM sleep, but not quite, and your body is nearly paralysed (as always happens whe asleep). Suddenly there is a frightening apparition and a heavy weight on you, which you can't shift. The people I know who have experienced this said it was very scary as they could not move and could clearly see they were being sat on by an old man.

One person I know escaped by convincing herself that it was only a dream but was rather shaken afterwards. It is an interesting phenomenon though.
