My 2 youngest kids were constipated from the formula all the time. My 22mo I gave apple/prune juice per the doctor in with her formula 1 oz then the rest water and then formula. my 12wk old the doctor said to give him about 2 oz of water between feedings and apple/prune juice gerber in his bottle. I helps alot. When people say it will hurt your baby it wont it may give them diarrhea that is it and helps with the constipation. I only do it about 1x a day not with every bottle.

NEVER give a baby that young fruit juice!!
If she's a formula baby, then double check the amount of water you're mixing the formula with. Chances are it's not enough water.
If you're a breastfeeding mom, make sure that you're getting plenty of water to drink!
Newborns won't have regular bowel movements, and as she is a preemie - she'll take a little bit longer to be regular.
Give your pediatrician a call, most good doctors have a great on-line nurse program.

Hi Pooh!
I'm a pediatric nurse, and work with lots of preemies and their formulas! The answer depends on a few factors, such as:
- how premature was your baby?
- what was her birth weight?
- how old is she now?
- what is her weight now?
- how often has she been constipated?
- what formula is she on, and how many calories per ounce is it?
Standard infant formula is 20 calories per ounce. Standard preemie formulas are 22 calories per ounce. Many preemies, depending on their weight and age, are on higher calorie formulas even, such as 24 cal/ounce, 28 cal/ounce, or even 30 cal/ounce. It's important to know, because apple juice is very low comparatively in calories.
Best thing is to ask her doctor. Any good pediatrician will want to answer that for you. Some options for constipation are giving some extra water (don't do this unless told to, because water will fill her up and has no calories!), using a little juice that is cut with water, or sometimes switching to a lower iron formula or even giving something such as Miralax. So, call her doctor to be sure!

No! Don't do it, I had 2 preemies & my son was always constipated or having diarhea it seemed. the RNs at his doctor's office would tell me to give him this special formula (sold where regular formulas are simalac makes it t is DH) and he wouldn't poop for days. Then I'd give him a 1/2 teaspoon of Karo in his formula. and he's shoot out pure liquid poop. Finally after what seemed like forever his doctor had him switch from the Neosure (preemie formula) to I think Isomil- one of the soy formulas. But don't give your preemie apple prune juice at all unless s/he is older. It would REALLY hurt his/her little tummy & s/he'd have
B-A-D diarhea from it. If your preemie is 6 months or more then it should be fine, but definately if your baby is under 3 months esp. being a preemie don't give him/her ANY juice until Doc says okay. Please. & I hope your little sweetie feels better soon.

I'm a mother of two, one of which is a 6 month old. I have used Enfamil Lipil for both of them. My 3 year old is healthy and smart in fact she rarely gets sick, even while going to pre-school. I saw your other question about your premie being constipated. I've heard that a little Kayro syrup works in the bottle, but never tried it. What I have done though is massage my babys' stomach, exercised her legs and if worse came to worst I gave them a little enema with warm soapy water.

Please contact the baby's pediatrician.
I use a little mineral oil when mine get constipated... but i never had a preemie! So please ask the dr. I am sure that a little apple or prune juice in the formula would be ok. But i don't know that it would help!!
My Dr told me one time that apple juice can sometimes bind them up too!
Just check with the DR. before trying anything!!!
Good Luck!

Do not add anything to the formula without checking with the doctor first. Trying giving her a baby bottle filled with water -- not too cold, obviousloy not too hot. Water should help the constipation. If the formula you are giving her has iron in it, that can cause constipation, too.

How old is your preemie? She might be too young to digest the juice and she'd end with a tummy ache or bad gas. Your doctor can recommend a stool softener that's good for tiny tummies.
