I'd research "sea trade" and give examples of how major civilizations have depended on the sea for trade...you have Greece, Rome, Carthage, the OLD World and the New World...

Try finding information on population growth by location. There should be some articles associated with the info. That ought to help. A good souorce might be the National Geographic Society.
