Good questions make us think, and this is a good one!
Not easy to add to the good answers above, but here's a try:
Awareness seems to be a state of consciousness that comes before cognition, or thought, or action. Maybe it is just an experiencing of the raw data from the senses before the mind processes it, in order to use it. 'Cognition' then lays out the data so it can become meaninngful, and Its parts then recognized. (If the incoming data contains information that must be acted upon immediately the thought part can be bypassed). There are probably various ways these processes can occur, but maybe this can provide an idea of the elements that are involved and how "awareness" might fit into an overall process. Maintaining awareness without allowing the other processes to kick in might be what is called meditation.

In a nutshell, 'awareness' is the state of perception.
Being aware of, or perceiving, what you are doing, what you are saying, what you are thinking of doing or saying, what others may be thinking, how others may regard you, your appearance or your behaviour, what you are feeling, how others may feel (empathy), what is happening around you.
Awareness may be conscious or it may be instinctive. The latter occurs when you know what the reaction will be to something you say or do - a vital trait in decision-making.
All in all, having a high sense of awareness is an important precursor to getting along with other people and for safeguarding yourself from making a fool of yourself or suffering someone else's displeasure.

animals just exist and humans are aware they exist... when an animal has a predator on their tail it's instinct for them to run, for a human we are literally thinking I don't want to die.. animals have no clue about anything that exists outside of their tiny worlds.... humans are aware that things that they do can effect something on the other side of the world.

Its a delusion, due to the effect of chemical reactions within our brain. Due to the complexities of neurons and chemistry we get this sensation which we perceive as awareness.

Alright folks... here's a non-academic wise answer:
Awareness is both the gathering of information through your senses (do you have sense enough?:)
and putting it into context mentally, so we can have some understanding of where it comes from, how it comes to us, and the probability of where it is going.
