I feel these gangs fill the gap left in the break down of the extended family. The gang becomes the family. They also fill in for the loss of a strong faith base. The gang has become their religion, the rules their scripture.

Safety in numbers is the basis of all organized groups, really.
People will want ties to other peoples, often outside of their family groups and when people with similar interests come together, you have a, according to the Webster definition, a gang.
Criminalized gangs are only a kind of gang, because, by definition, the group of buddes who go for a pint once a week are technically a gang, just as are those who sell drugs and are more heavily armed than the cops.
But if you want the source of criminal behaviour, that one is way past my pay grade. But power and a quick buck come to mind.

You call yourself redneck which indicates why you don't understand gangs. Rednecks are normally country folk where the extended family is held in high esteem. Family get togethers, picnics, barn raising (in the old days) and just week end fishing trips puts you and your clan together. You belong to a group, (a form of gang without the violence). Conversely, gangs are born in the inner cities, slums often. Here there is no immediate family, must less an extended family. These kids come from one parent enclaves, I hesitate to call them families. Man is a pack animal, not unlike prey animals. We want to "BELONG". If we don't have a "redneck" family, create a false one and society calls them gangs.

Throughout human existence, people have sought a sense of acceptance and belonging. If they do not find it within their own family, they find it where they can, even from a gang. Combine that with the hopelessness that often comes from living in a negative urban environment, discrimination, unemployment, crime, etc. and that is often the end result. Everyone doesn't grow up in a "Leave it to Beaver" setting. Prison culture can also offer a sense of belonging, and the cycle continues. Unfortunately, it's mostly people of color who are victims of the cycle.

Because Men refuse to stand up and be the Father that they never had! Women are expected to raise kids by themselves and many of them become overwhelmed and exhausted because they have to work 2 or 3 jobs just to get by and they aren't there for the kids either because of this. If these gang members had caring families to support them , they would have productive lives.

Primarily, the reason is the expoitation of the belief in the phrase "strength in numbers". People who feel that they cannot survive by themselves have a need to be with others in order to feel safe, as well as feel accepted. As the group grows in size, so does their feelings of territorial possession. "Their" turf begins to be encroached by another gang. "Wars" break out between rival gangs with many innocents getting injured or even killed in the ensuing fights.
My personal belief is that only weak and insecure individuals join gangs in order to satisfy their need to be a part of a crowd. They need to learn to stand on their two feet like everyone else and earn other's respect through positive action, not by trying to instill fear by intimidation. Unfortunately, by the time members do come to that realization, they're in too deep.

Some people just want to belong to something, feel accepted and loved. Sadly, some people will also compromise their morals and ethics in order to stay in a particular group. I personally can't see myself killing someone unless my life was in danger and even then I'd try to just hurt the person enough to stop them. But, some people in gangs have developed a sort of numbness towards unneccessary violence against others.

They are pressured into creating them. Gangs are glorified by their heros, therefore members are easily manipulated into joining one.
