All species of caterpillar eventually become a butterfly or moth. Many of the so called caterpillars also turn into wasps or sometimes even beetles. All caterpillars are the immature stages of these insects. they are simply eating machines, they eat until they grow large enough (molt enough times) to form the pupa, then they all emerge as adults. This last stage is very important, they must achieve this winged adult stage in order to mate, because only in doing so will they develop the genitalia, and be able to find a mate and copulate.
If the species is to continue, they must enter this final stage of development!

The common or evergreen bagworm (Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis) forms a cocoonlike bag with its head and legs protruding and dangles from a branch, looking like a small, ugly Christmas ornament. The male metamorphoses into your ordinary moth. But the female remains in the bag, having morphed into a "larviform" creature that still looks like a caterpillar, and thus ensconced awaits the ministrations of the male.

"When a male finds her, he mates with her by means of an elongate extensible copulatory apparatus that can be extended deep into the bag containing the female. The female isn't technically a caterpillar, but she looks enough like one.

Yes, they will either become moths or butterflies. This is a very cool thing to look into.
At our house, the cicadas are 'hatching'! They have been underground, and they crawl out of holes in the dirt, and they soon shed their shells. We used to call them 'locust shells'. They are sticking all over the trees and everywhere!
