Call around to the local clubs and bars and try to set up some bookings (gigs). Depending on what kind of music you play you can even get gigs in your local American Legion's and Moose Lodge's. You can also play some gigs in nursing homes, they pay little or nothing, but the older people really love it. Basically, any place that has live music is where you want to call to try and get a booking.

You don't. I play in a local weekend bar band and am getting about the same amount of money that I was getting 35 years ago. Horrid business. You'd better do it for the love of music, not the money. Good luck!
