Can a food chain have only 2 components?...I need the answer!

I can't say for sure because this is wat abstract.Chances are that one entity would eventually need to feed to stay alive so the stronger one would feed on the weaker one in theory.The food chain would then cease unless some cell division or mutation took place creating another entity.Hope some of this makes sense cuz it's purely speculation.
