If there was already an ultrasound finding one baby, then there is no chance of having twins. A woman cannot get pregnant, after she is already pregnant. Sometimes a woman may drop more than one egg, but then fertilization usually is within a few short days of each other. A few weeks need to go by in order for a pregnancy to show up on ultrasound.
The latter is true, though. An ultrasound may find multiples in an early ultrasound, and then the mother may lose one. This is called "vanishing twin syndrome."
Be happy with only one baby. One healthy baby is already a miraculous wonder of life.

An ultrasound will show if there is more than one baby. Even very early ones where the baby(s) only look like sacs on ultrasound. Is there one or two?
Heartbeats also show up on ultrasound... is there one or two?
The techs are pretty well trained, and they can usually spot twins. Although I'm sure it IS possible for them to miss it, it's probably very unlikely.

Yes it is possible but not likely. Usually ultrasounds can pick out the second fetus even if it's hiding behind it's sibling. Though 'mistakes' have known to have happened. True story: My mom's neighbor was pregnant, she went for ultra sounds and was told her baby was healthy and everything was going "according to plan". Her husband was the "joker" on the block so you can understand when nobody believed him when he called us up on April Fool's Day to announce his wife just gave birth to twin boys (much to the surprise of both parents and doctor). We all rushed to the hospital only to find that the 'joke' really was on us - she did have twins!!!

Early in the pregnancy it's definitely possible to be having two babies and the ultrasound only shows one - the other baby may not be in a location visible or one may be blocking the other.

I know of a women that had twins and they never found the 2nd baby until the 36 th week. The baby was hiding right behind the first one and they just happen to catch a 3 arm in the picture. They sure were shocked. It doesn't happen very often but it can.

Not usually but nothing is impossible, they will have you come in a lot and the always listen the heart beat if there are multiple beats they will tell you and they may do about 2 more ultrasounds. CONGRATS!!!

Yes, one baby could be blocking the other from view. As for the heart beats one heart beat could be more faint then the other or the rhythms could be similar enough so that they sound like one.

if the ultra sound shows one baby IT'S ONE BABY! they can tell at 4.5weeks on ultrasound (about 3 days after you've missed your period).
