Traditions are normally based on what helped certain people survive or do better at a specific time in a specific situation. If the situation which sparked that tradition changes but the tradition stays the same, then the point of that tradition is a waste of your time when you should probably being doing something else. Tradition is an excellent way to teach people to do things without having to explain why, and in many cases this behavior helps people get along. However, it is far better to act because you know why you're doing something than just to do it because you've always been doing it.
