Depends on what you are polishing but when my jewelery needs a little cleaning I used toothpaste and a toothbrush. The small cleaning agents in toothpaste do the trick every time. My jewelery shines like you wouldn't believe. It works GREAT on anything metal. Silver, brass, gold, whatever (and its not greasy and wont leave your stuff smelling fried)

Ketcup can be used to polish copper pots.
I've heard, but not tried, that milk can be used to wipe down dusty plant leaves instead of chemicals to shine them up.
If you use toothpaste on jewelry, do not use the kind that have an abrasive in it. That can mess up jewelry. Also don't use toothpaste period on real pearls.
