exercise--- would be tops on the list
also fish oil (omeg 3 fatty acids)-- you need minimum 1500 mg/day and can take up to 3000 mg per day. some people will tell you flax seed is good too, but the body does not convert it the same way, you need 10x the flax seed oil to get the same breakdown of omega 3s (i wont go into the chemistry of it). get it in pills & make sure they add some orange or lemon oil to it to make it lose the fish taste.

also oatmeal for breakfast is a great way to get the level down.

Talk to your doctor about why he/she feels it is so important to take medication--most doctors I've talked to consider 158 quite good, and anything under 200 acceptable. I'm surprised that he/she feels medication is necessary. Oatmeal every day can be surprisingly effective. Cut out the red meat and saturated fats, eat fish, and get daily exercise. Garlic supplements are helpful for some. If, for some reason this is an emergency and medicine really is required, there are many choices besides tricor, some with few side effects. Ask about these. However, I would think that your doctor would welcome it if you made some lifestyle changes and brought your cholesterol down a few points, without resorting medications.

It depends on the amount of plaque buildup and cholesterol in your body. If the levels require medication there is a good chance the drugs will be the only treatment available for a rapid result. Speaking with a health care professional about your available options would be the only way I would recommend proceeding if you do have high cholesterol.
Taking other advice from unreliable sources can be dangerous to your health.

Stop eating fatty foods, fried foods, shrimp, and red meat.
Eat Cheerios and Oatmeal to lower cholesterol as part of a well balanced diet.
Work out.

We ask our patients to change their diet and exercise more often before we start drugs. But more than 80% of people will not do this, and end up on a drug regiment.

There is no quick way for any problem usually. Eating garlic, taking fish oil caps with alot of omegas fatty acid in them. Oat bran, and up the old exercise. Walk everyday. Avoid high cholesterol foods ,like liver, shell fish and soft cheese. Lower the amount of eggs in your diet and lay off the caffiene. that should do it. good Luck!!

There's not a quick way, but I've read that the following can help:
-cinnamon sprinkled on food,

-red grapes (and or grape juice) becase of their tannin content (red wine too),

-whole grains such as oats (oatmeal) and flaxseeds (grind the seeds yourself as you need them or buy the best quality oil you can find),

-reduce red meat intake,

-add Omega-3s to your diet (fish oil supplements or eating certain fish can help)

-Eliminate fast foods from your diet; they contain too many of the "bad" cholesterol ingredients (not to mention all the preservatives, etc.)

Some people swear by adding oats as in oatmeal to their diet on a regular basis and/or adding flax seed to diet or even oatmeal on a daily basis will do the trick.
