Liquid soap is made for washing hands and shower gel is for the whole body. The skin on your body is more sensitive than that of the hands - gel is a little softer, more gentler on the skin than liquid soap.

From where i work where we sell these items, there is a difference between a shower gel and a liquid soap.
Usually our "liquid soap" refers to handwash and shower gel as a bathing gel or bath and shower gel. Our "liquid soap" contains more moisturiser than a shower gel hence its too oily for a body.
"Liquid soap" is a brand name for our shop.

But , in general, a liquid soap refers to a soap not in its solid form. So, a liquid soap, covers handwash, bath and shower gels, body wash, creamy handwash, liquid fabric detergent or fabric wash, linen wash, dog wash etc.
While a shower gel refers to a specific type of liquid soap meant for bathing.

'gorfette' is right, liquid soap is for washing hands but shower gel is for the body. Some companies make shower gels which can be used on scalp and hair too, but they are not shampoo.

Thanks!
